Aguas Limpias Para Un Buen Porvenir  (2012)

El Porvenir is a small Honduran town surrounded by pineapple fields. A group of neighbors have formed an organization, APROMADIPOR, to protect the environment and promote development in the area. They believe that runoff from the pineapple fields has already damaged the community’s rivers, and puts nearby coral reefs at risk. Oscar Funez spoke with ChangeStream Media about the changes that APROMADIPOR hopes to catalyze. (Click on the red [CC] button for English subtitles.)

Familias Saludables: Sheila’s Story (2012)

Sheila’s life fell apart when her husband died, leaving her HIV-positive with five children. On the Honduran island of Roatán, decent jobs are hard to come by for everyone, and nearly impossible for people living with HIV. Fortunately, Sheila found Familias Saludables, a small nonprofit that provides food, clothing, emotional support and educational opportunities to her family. Familias Saludables relies on contributions from generous donors to assist HIV-affected families, and to prevent the spread of the virus through education, testing and an infant formula program.

ChangeStream Media volunteers spent two months on Roatán, interviewing Familias Saludables’ clients. We were inspired by their perseverance in the face of extreme hardship, and impressed by the breadth and quality of services that Familias Saludables offers.

The Cambodian Children’s Advocacy Foundation: Bringing Preschool Education to Rural Cambodia (2011)

The Cambodian Children’s Advocacy Foundation (ccaf-khmer.org) runs 18 pre-schools in rural Kampot Province, Cambodia. They provide four- and five-year-olds with basic math and literacy skills, along with nutritious meals and medical checks. Only one in seven Cambodian children attend school before age six, so there is a pressing need for this successful program to be expanded and replicated.

In the past, education has been based on memorization, but new child-friendly teaching techniques are being introduced.
